How to distinguish real fur from fake: 7 proven ways
Buying a real fur hat or other fur accessory can feel tricky. Many faux fur hats look very similar to the real thing at first glance. But with a few simple checks, you can quickly tell the difference. Here are 7 easy and proven ways to recognize genuine fur.
-
Look at the base of the hairs
Take a close look at the skin or backing. In real fur, you will see natural leather. The hairs grow directly from it in an irregular way. In faux fur, the base is usually fabric or a mesh. The fibers are often attached in neat, even rows.
-
Feel the texture
Natural fur feels soft, smooth, and slightly cool to the touch. It also has different lengths of hair — some longer guard hairs and softer underfur. Faux fur often feels the same all over and can feel a bit plastic or too uniform.
-
Check how it moves
Blow gently on the fur or run your hand against the direction of the hair. Real fur moves naturally and falls back into place in a soft, uneven way. Fake fur tends to stay more rigid or spring back in a very even pattern.
-
Do the burn test (carefully!)
This is one of the oldest methods. Take a few loose hairs and carefully burn them (do this outside and with caution). Genuine fur smells like burnt hair and turns to brittle ash. Faux fur melts, smells like plastic, and forms hard beads.
-
Look at the color and shine
Real fur has natural variations in color and a soft, deep shine. You will often notice slight differences between hairs. Fake fur usually has a more artificial, flat, or overly shiny look, and the color is perfectly even.
-
Check the weight
A real fur hat or accessory often feels a bit heavier than it looks because of the leather base and dense underfur. Many faux fur hats feel lighter and more hollow.
-
Look at the cut edge or inside
If possible, look at the edge or the inside of the item. Natural fur will show a leather skin. Faux fur will show fabric, glue, or synthetic backing.
Bonus tip:
When shopping for a real fur hat, genuine fur accessories, or even real fur pom poms, always ask the seller about the origin of the fur. Reputable sellers who work with quality materials are usually happy to share details.
With these simple checks, you can feel more confident when choosing between real fur and faux fur. Take your time, trust your senses, and you will quickly learn to spot the difference.
